Can Engineering Change Our Climate for the Better Part 1
Can Engineering Change Our Climate for the Better Part 1 Can Engineering Change Our Climate for the Better Part 1 Can Engineering Change Our Climate for the Better? Part 1Climate engineering is the process of designing large-scale systems that have the potential to control climate and reduce the impact of climate change. This is a highly controversial topic because of the complexity of the systems involved and the possible negative effects upon the environment and human populations. The field of climate engineering is in its relative infancy. New climate engineering techniques are likely to materialize the mora we learn. Prof. Deborah Gordon, Carnegie Mellon University Examples of climate engineering technologies. Source GAO. Image Jim Lee / US Government Accountability Office, Center for Science, Technology, and EngineeringClimate change technologies are largely theoretical at this stage and fall into two main categories greenhouse gas removal and solar radiation manag ement. So far these methods have been developed and tested via laboratory studies and simulations, with only a few small-scale prototypes tested in the field. No technologies have yet been deployed at a large-enough scale to have global impacts. But they are worth watching as the public and private sectors seek new solutions for specific applications.Greenhouse Gas RemovalGreenhouse gas removal strategies focus on removing greenhouse gasesfrom theatmosphere, especially CO2. Humans have increased atmospheric CO2concentration by more than a third since the Industrial Revolution began, according to NASA, which calls CO2 the most important long-lived forcing of climate change. The top greenhouse gas removal strategies includeBioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). This approach takes advantage of carbon naturally stored by plants during photosynthesis. By burning biomass to generate energy before it decomposes and releases its bounty of carbon and then capturing the carbon re leased during biomass combustion and storing it underground, BECCS removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, says Deborah Gordon, the director of the Energy and Climate Program at Carnegie Mellon University. An active BECCS project is the Archer Daniels Midland project in Illinois, which captures carbon and uses it to enhance oil recovery in nearby wells. The project removes more than 1 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere annually.Biological Carbon Sequestration. ansicht technologies engineer biological building blocks of plants and other systems to take in more CO2, thereby reducing levels in the atmosphere. Experiments are under way to create plants with an increased appetite for carbon dioxide, Gordon says. Researchers at Max Planck Institute in Germany are attempting to use enzymes to alter the biochemistry of photosynthesisfor example, creating algae that is specially designed to pull CO2 out of the atmosphere.Direct Air Capture. These technologies capture indu strial-scale quantities of carbon dioxide from the air in the atmosphere. Several approaches are being tested, including designing mechanical trees that absorb carbon dioxide. Klaus Lackner, director of the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions at Arizona State University, invented a version of the mechanical trees while he was a professor at the Columbia University Earth Institute. He covered the structure with artificial leaves made from a resin that absorbs CO2. As the windblows, these leaves take CO2 out of the air, he says. When the tree is dry, it loads and when it is wet, it releases CO2 back. We then pump it out of the chamber and compress it to liquid CO2.Other methods include running air through a caustic chemical process to remove carbon dioxide, geochemical techniques where CO2 reacts with certain minerals to create geologically stable carbonates. Another, air-capture plants, uses walls of fans to strip carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.Read Part 2 to discover more about of environmental engineering.fruchtmark Crawford is an independent writer.

Do you have a favorite child A majority of US adults think you do
Do you have a favorite child A majority of US adults think you do Do you have a favorite child A majority of US adults think you do Remember when your parents promised you that they loved you and your brother equally, despite your sneaking suspicions that he was always the favorite? Well according to a majority of Americans, they lied.Sorry to dash your hopes, but according to research by YouGov Plan Track, 51% of US adults think that parents with multiple children tend to have a favorite. And the people who agree with them are pretty authoritative - 47% of parents with at least one child under 18 say the same.Credit:YouGovIf you need to take a moment to cry into your pillow, go right ahead. The truth hurts, but hey, knowledge is power. It seems that favoritism is especially present in homes with 2-3 children, or at least thatâs what members of those households perceive. 46% of people in households with 2-3 kids thought parents with multiple kids tend to have a favorite. As the number of kids goes up, that statistic goes down - maybe because Momâs too tired to even pick a favorite.Of course, none of these people are saying that THEIR parents have favorites. Or if theyâre parents themselves, theyâre not saying they love one of their children more than the others (wink, wink). Americans just think that generally, parents tend to have a loved child and then also a few other ones.Credit: YouGovItâs okay, Jimmy, mommy still loves you. Just maybe not quite as much as she does Ingrid. Maybe if you had worn your retainer and done the dishes once in a while â¦Anyway, hereâs to one mystery out there being thismuch closer to being solved. Even if your parents donât love you less than your sibling, a majority of Americans think they do. And thatâs what really matters, right?

Tips for Creating an Inclusive Workplace
Tips for Creating an Inclusive Workplace Tips for Creating an Inclusive Workplace Last Fridayâs historic Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges guarantees same-sex couples in all 50 states the freedom to marry and the right to have their marriages recognized in each state. While this landmark decision guarantees same-sex couples important legal rights, acceptance of individuals who identify as LGBT will still take time. In fact, there is no federal law protecting LGBT workers against discrimination based on their sexual orientation. Although many states and municipalities have passed anti-discrimination laws, 32 states have not or offer limited protections, meaning that in the majority of states, workers can be fired simply for identifying as LGBT. Speakers at the MCCA Creating Pathways to Diversity ® Conference held in Washington, D.C. discussed ways to foster acceptance and enhance LGBT rights in the workplace. Below find tips to ensure that your firm or company is a welcoming place for all employees: Ensure that anti-discrimination policies are included in companyâs official policies and employee handbook Provide Safe Space and Ally cards as a visible sign of inclusion Encourage employees to be out, if they feel comfortable Publicly support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act Create LGBT affinity groups Educate the HR department about how new laws impact benefits for married same-sex couples Treat same-sex married couples the same as straight married couples FOLLOW VAULT ON TWITTER @VAULTLAW, INSTAGRAM @VaultCareers and FACEBOOK Read More Have Wall Streetâs Gay and Female Diversity Policies Gone Too Far or Not Far Enough? The One Case BigLaw Firms Wonât TakeBest Law Firms for LGBT Individuals

Vladimir Putin teaches you how not to compliment women
Vladimir Putin teaches you how not to compliment women Vladimir Putin teaches you how not to compliment women March 8 was International Womenâs Day, which asked for exactly 24 hours of respect for women and their contributions to work and society. Some world leaders did not quite get the memo. From praising women for their childbearing skills to their supermarket-shopping prowess, here are some notable flubs that all of us can learn not to imitate when paying tribute to the women in our lives.Women have a broad portfolio of accomplishmentsMany women are proud to nurture their families - and that is not all they do. Women also commute to work to support their families, contribute to their communities, help charities, innovate, and create new things in their own right. Recognizing the totality of a womanâs contribution - especially if you are complimenting a colleague - is important.Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a 213-word letter addressed to Russian women on International Womenâs Day, and in his praise he focused solely on womenâs contributions to the family: âYou care day and night for your children, grandchildren and your family. Even today, on International Womenâs Day, you are still caught up in your routine, working tirelessly, always on timeâ¦.We always turn to women for inspiration and consolation, and always find it. Women give us life and perpetuate it in our children.âWhy would anyone take offense? Because Putin framed women primarily as support for men, rather than humans in their own right. Like men, women are individuals. This is not the first time Putin has praised women primarily as mothers. In his 2015 letter on International Womenâs Day, he described how good mothers provide the solid foundation to any Russian childhood with the expression: âto drink it in with your motherâs milk.â And yet, as women know, women have multi-faceted identities and challenges outside of their ability to reproduce, and these kinds of compliments are limiting. It has become habitual to compliment even the highest-achieving women - like rocket scientists! - on their âmean beef stroganoff.â To give a real, meaningful compliment to a woman, think more broadly than what she does at home. Women are more than their looks Just as it would be unthinkable to praise a manâs handsomeness as a personal accomplishment- even if it means he gets paid more - praising a womanâs beauty falls short of the mark.Yet Putin complimented women, in his speech, for their being decorative: âYou fill this world with beaut y and vitality, giving warmth and comfort, cordiality and harmony with your tenderness and generosity of spirit.âComplimenting a womanâs âbeautyâ can be a double-edged sword, and should be avoided, especially at work. Like complimenting a womanâs domestic prowess, it can feel reductive. And at work, it can be downright insulting: women, like men, go to the office to get things done, not to be stared at, sized up and evaluated for how decorative they are.As long as weâre human, weâll notice - which is why some psychologists study âpulchronomics,â or why pretty people get paid more. But work hard on seeing past peopleâs looks. Evening the playing field so everyone is evaluated on their work will help team cohesion, and being able to see past looks to the human potential inside is good practice for managers and leaders.Women do more than shop Brazilian president Michel Temer gave a speech on International Womenâs Day that praised womenâs economic skills - f or spotting the lowest prices in the supermarket.âNobody is more capable to pointing out the unbalances in, letâs say, supermarket prices than women,â Temer said in his speech.âNobody is more capable of detecting eventual economic fluctuation than women, since they monitor the increases and decreases of their homeâs budgets.âLike Putinâs speech, Temerâs limited the potential of women to contribute more than domestic support.Protesters took to the streets in Brazil that day with signs that read âthey want us as first ladies, never as presidents,â according to CNN.Women arenât supposed to smile all the timeOn Wednesday, Putin also promised his citizens that Russia âwill do our outmost to surround the women we love with care and attention, so that they can smile more often.â Whatâs wrong with smiling more often? Nothing. But being asked to smile is being asked to give up your own emotions to make someone else feel better. It also ties into the expectation th at women should be decorative at all times. Itâs a small, but significant, form of unpaid âemotional laborâ that women are asked to do every day. Back up your supportive words with your actions If youâre not Putin or Temer, itâs pretty easy to be respectful and appreciative to the women around you - but being nice for 24 hours doesnât accomplish much. Whether youâre a man or a woman, consider backing up the compliments by supporting women in other, tangible ways: hiring women at work, promoting women as often as you promote men, stopping people from interrupting women at meetings, and, if youâre a world leader, creating policies that help women achieve equal pay and equal status under the law. The warm cheer for women in Putinâs letter, for instance, starkly contrasts with his recent actions. In February, Putin signed legislation that decriminalizes âmoderateâ domestic abuse as an administrative offense. Before, this kind of family violence would get a two-year jail sentence; now, if itâs only happened once in a year, it can just lead to a 15-day sentence in jail or a fine.Of course, this only applies if you believe women belong in the workplace; a Gallup poll released on March 8 suggested that 30% of men worldwide believe women should stay at home.

The Art of the Thank-You Note
The Art of the Thank-You Note The Art of the Thank-You Note The days following an interview can be full of stress. You replay each part of the conversation in your head, second-guess your choice of outfit and constantly check your phone for missed calls. (Wait, are we talking about a first date or an interview here?) While the three-day rule of asking for a second date doesnât apply, itâs important to follow up appropriately with your interviewer. A handwritten thank-you note isnât necessary- and might even arrive too late. Instead, within one business day, send a short email thanking your interviewer for his or her time. Here, some ideas for crafting the perfect thank-you email: Spell your interviewerâs name correctly. Yes, it sounds obvious. But misspelling a name or title is more common than you would think. To avoid this, make sure to ask for a business card before you leave your interview. As a backup method, look up your interviewerâs contact information on the companyâs website or LinkedIn. Mention something you discussed. Demonstrate that you were actively listening during the interview by referring to something interesting you learned about the company or position. For example, note that you enjoyed hearing about the impressive training opportunities available through the company. You can also cite a personal connection that you shared with your interviewer. If you discussed your passion for French films, reminding the interviewer of this will help to reinforce your rapport. Demonstrate your enthusiasm. Reiterate how excited you are about the opportunity. Stating that the interview increased your interest in the role is always a good idea. Provide references or a writing sample if requested. If your interviewer requested any follow up information from you, include it as part of your thank you note. Proofread your email. Asking a friend to take a look is not going too far! Just one typo could negatively affect your interviewerâs opinion of you. Have other thank-you note tips? Let us know in the comments!

4 ways clever people use meetings to increase their visibility
4 ways clever people use meetings to increase their visibility 4 ways clever people use meetings to increase their visibility In the workplace, meetings come in all shapes and sizes: thereâs the in-person meeting, the conference call, the video conference and the informal pop up meeting at the coffee bar during break time. As pervasive as meetings are â" they often get a bad rap in the workplace.Meetings are often viewed as a hindrance to productivity and something to be avoided at all costs. But, rather than think about meetings as a waste of time, think of them as a unique opportunity to showcase your leadership skills. After all, meetings are at the heart of how teams function and how businesses operate. If you want to increase your visibility and boost your credibility at work â" meetings are the place to do it. Here is how:1. Show upIf you want to get ahead in your career, you have to be seen. People need to know who you are and what you bring to the table. The best way to do that is to show up at meetings. Showing up will allow you to become better known by your peers and others in your organiza tion.Make sure the meeting is on your calendar and get there early. Arriving early gives you an opportunity to engage in the all-important informal chit-chat that takes place before the meeting begins. It also gives you an opportunity to set the tone in the room by greeting everyone with a warm smile and a positive attitude.2. Speak upAt meetings, being seen is only half the battle. The other half is being heard. When you participate in a meeting, read the agenda before the meeting and show up prepared to make insightful and valuable recommendations that will move projects forward. Having a voice during meetings is important if you want to make a positive impression on key stakeholders.3. Stand upBeing agreeable isnât always the best leadership strategy at a meeting. We need to stand for something. Donât be afraid to stand up for a cause, an issue, a work plan, or strategy that you really believe in and know that you can apply yourself to. Standing up does not require confrontation or aggression. It does, however, require a level of confidence and assertiveness to express an opinion that might not be popular or to bring something to light that everyone is thinking, but are afraid to articulate.4. Step upMany women in the workplace think that if they work âhard enoughâ at their current jobs that they will be noticed and eventually promoted. The reality is that working hard on your current assignments is not enough. Assess your competencies and volunteer for more challenging assignments that will highlight your skills and capabilities.New projects and leadership opportunities often emerge during meetings. Volunteering to take on a project that needs a leader during a meeting is a great way to demonstrate your willingness to take on new challenges. Not only will your work be commended if you do a good job, but your ability to step up when needed will be rewarded.Ellie Nieves, JD, MBA, develops webinars, seminars, and coaching programs to h elp high achieving women show up, speak up, and step up in their careers. 9 Things to Never Say in a Salary Negotiation
9 Things to Never Say in a Salary Negotiation 9 Things to Never Say in a Salary Negotiation Youâre 96% sure that you are ready to schedule a meeting with your boss to ask for a raise. Or perhaps youâre nearing the end of the job interview process and an offer is in sight. However, if youâre like me, you have definitely put your foot in your mouth a time or two saying the wrong thing at the absolute worst moment. Doh! No matter how many times you rehearse what to say, thereâs always that risk of fumbling right at the five-yard line. Instead of panicking, get prepared. To coach us along in the salary negotiation process , we turned to Josh Doody, author of Fearless Salary Negotiation . â A salary negotiation is a collaboration, and a key ingredient of a successful collaboration is good communication,â says Doody. âItâs important to be very clear with what you communicate to avoid ambiguity, which could complicate things and slow the negotiation process.â Instead of Doody simply sharing the things you should say, heâs here to warn you about the potential negotiation landmines to avoid when angling for the salary you deserve. Here are 9 things to never say in a salary negotiation: The most common question recruiters will ask a candidate is something like, âSo where are you right now in terms of salary, and what are you looking for if you make this move?â Donât fall for it. âI call this The Dreaded Salary Question and itâs tricky because it usually comes up early in the interview process, and most candidates donât think of it as part of a salary negotiation even though it is,â says Doody. â Answering this question by disclosing numbers can make it very difficult to negotiate effectively later on because it can box the candidate in. Once they disclose current or desired salary, the offers they get are very likely to be tied to those numbers. That can be very expensive if the company might have offered them a much higher salary than they disclosed.â Donât disclose your current or desired salary! â Recovering from this mistake can be tricky and each situation is unique. But one way to untether from those original numbers is to review the benefits package for deficiencies,â says Doody. âIf the health insurance offering, paid vacation, target bonus or other aspects of the benefits package are underwhelming, the candidate can use those as reasons to ask for a higher salary to compensate.â Iâm not comfortable sharing my current salary. I would prefer to focus on the value I can add to this company rather than what Iâm paid at my current job. I donât have a specific number in mind for a desired salary, and you know better than I do what value my skill set and experience could bring to your company. I want this move to be a big step forward for me in terms of both responsibility and compensation. According to Doody, ânegotiating is uncomfortable, and our natural tendency is to try to smooth the edges on a difficult conversation. Saying sorry could signal to the recruiter or hiring manager that you might be willing to back down, and that could be expensive. Donât apologize for negotiating.â âYou want to continuously improve your situation throughout the negotiation and you do that by avoiding negative language and focusing on positive language. Instead of âNo, that doesnât work for me.â (two negative words) you can say, âI would be more comfortable withâ¦â (positive words). Negative words slow things down and may put up walls that make collaboration difficult. Using only positive words is difficult at first, but youâll get better with practice.â While this may sound like the exact word to use when speaking to a recruiter, Doody insists it should be used with caution. âYouâll often get a job offer that seems really appealing, and it might be far more than you expected. Your instinct, in that case, might be to just accept the offer because itâs so good.â âItâs possible you underestimated your value in this situation. Instead of âYesâ, formulate a counter offer to see how much you can improve it. The negotiation should end with the company saying âYesâ to you. Once they say âYesâ to you, or you run out of things to ask for, then you are finished negotiating.â Procrastinators , this one is for you. âSometimes itâs easier to avoid uncomfortable parts of a negotiation by deferring those parts of the conversation until after youâre hired. That can be a very expensive mistake because you wonât have the same latitude to negotiate and improve your position once youâre in the door. Push through the discomfort and get the best possible result now,â Doody advises. âTry is a passive word that leaves a lot of wiggle room, and you donât want that,â insists Doody. âItâs easy for someone to say - honestly or not - âWeâll tryâ¦â and reply with, âWe tried and it just didnât work out.â Donât ask them to âtryâ to do something. Instead, use more positive language like âI would be more comfortable with.â While this word seems counter-intuitive because you are negotiating to get more, itâs a word that is too general for a successful negotiation. Instead of asking for âmoreâ salary or âmoreâ vacation, this is your time to get specific. âDonât leave things to the imagination once youâre negotiating. Instead of âCould you budge on the salary?â, say, âI would be more comfortable with a base salary of $105,000.'â Lastly, the word âwantâ can tank negotiations. Using it can undercut the entire premise of your argument that you deserve to be paid more and you deserve a more competitive salary. Go into a negotiation with facts and figures, making a compelling case. Start with printing out the results of your personal salary estimator, Know Your Worth . See what you base salary should be and see what the industry norms are. âYou could talk about what you want, which just isnât all that important. Or you could talk about what the company wants, which is not as potent as talking about what the company needs, which are the most important thing,â adds Doody. âFocus on the companyâs needs and how you can help meet those needs so they can easily see your value and work to compensate you for it.â Josh Doody is an author and entrepreneur who helps people earn more money and get paid what theyâre worth with simple tactics that he has developed as a hiring manager and salary negotiation coach. His book Fearless Salary Negotiation helps people excel in job interviews and salary negotiations.

New Grads Adopt Appropriate Workplace Language
New Grads Adopt Appropriate Workplace Language New Grads Adopt Appropriate Workplace Language Congratulations. You are stepping out of the world of higher education and into the professional sphere. You have worked hard, and you are ready for this. Professional life gives you a whole new opportunity to learn about your field and about yourself. And with it comes a refined lexicon. Learning professional language is a challenge on par with learning to speak the language of your professors. While your peers at the university were likely similar to you in terms of their age and experience, your colleagues at your new job will likely include a much wider age range. You may find yourself working alongside some other new grads, but you may also be working with colleagues who are older than you. Some may even be your parentsâ age. So you want to make sure that your language makes you sound like the mature professional you are, ready to forge productive relationships in your new professional environment. Donât worry. This will quickly become second nature to you. Keep it Clean Using curse words or vulgar language is outside the norm for workplace culture. So in preparation, pay attention to the words that you regularly use. Edit language that is inappropriate for the office. This means swearing, rude or vulgar language. Some workplaces may become very busy, and when that happens the colorful language may begin to fly. But this is something you have to be very careful about. While you may hear your colleagues bending this rule, use caution and donât assume it is okay for an entry level professional to follow suit. As T.S. Eliot famously remarked, âIts not wise to violate the rules until you know how to observe them.â There will come a time when you will know what you can get away with it. But give yourself plenty of lead time to learn the culture before you take any risks. Dealbreakers Certain words are never appropriate. Derogatory or sexual language is not tolerated in the workplace. Words that aim to mock or devalue individuals or groups of people are not acceptable. In the professional world, this kind of language is not just frowned upon, it can lead to termination. Like, Watch your use of Filler Words Mine is âlike.â I still say it a lot, but not as much as I used to. I remember trying to weed it out of my lexicon when I was starting a new job in an international professional environment that adhered to traditional professional customs. Using filler words can make you sound immature. So pay attention to filler words you use. Itâs OK to pause when you speak. Take notes, and prepare remarks you make so that you donât get nervous and pepper your pauses with fillers. You donât always have to use this strategy, but it may give you some early successes, and that will help boost your confidence, which will help you to acclimate to your new environment. Acronyms Most professional cultures Iâve been involved with use a slew of acronyms for everything from report titles to meeting locations. It will take some time to learn these site-specific terms, but in six months you will be slinging them like a pro. Keep in mind, though, that your colleagues may not be versed in the acronyms that you regularly use; for example, YOLO, OMG, IDK, BRB, etc. I know it doesnât seem fair that they can use their acronyms while you have to keep yours on the back burner. But keep in mind that for many of your colleagues, these are not common knowledge. Best of luck in your new job.
